On June 25, 2026, the finals of the Fifth Lawyers Debate Competition of Jiangsu Boshida Law Firm and the First Lawyers Debate Invitational Tournament of the International R&D Headquarters Park were officially held. The event was jointly organized by the Youth Working Committee of Boshida Law Firm and the Youth Working Committee of Rayto Law Firm. After intense competition in the preliminary round on June 10, four teams—Liaoyuan Team, Success Team, Rayto Team, and Dream Team—successfully advanced to the finals. In the finals, the difficulty of the debate topics was further increased, and the professionalism and rigor of the event reached a higher level.

Review of the Final Debate Topic:

An adult leopard escaped from a zoo in a certain city and fled into Xiaohongshan, west of the zoo. After the incident was exposed by the media, it became a topic of street gossip. One day, Mr. Li claimed that he could capture the leopard alive. His colleagues Mr. Zhang and Mr. Zhao expressed disbelief on the spot. Mr. Li became angry and bet that he could catch the leopard that very night, with life and death at his own risk. If he succeeded, Mr. Zhang would treat them; if he failed, Mr. Li would treat them. Mr. Zhang was initially unwilling to bet, but could not withstand Mr. Li’s repeated questioning of the two: “I am not afraid, so what are you afraid of?” Mr. Zhang then agreed to the bet. Mr. Li and Mr. Zhang asked Mr. Zhao to serve as an “intermediary witness” and made it clear that no matter which side treated them afterward, Mr. Zhao would be included. Mr. Zhao agreed to serve as the “intermediary witness.” That night, Mr. Li took a staff and entered Xiaohongshan alone to catch the leopard. At midnight, Mr. Li indeed encountered the hungry leopard. Mr. Li was terrified and fled. In desperation, he jumped into a deep pit to hide, resulting in a leg fracture. The leopard circled the deep pit several times and then left. Mr. Li called the police on his mobile phone and was rescued. The next day, relevant authorities found the leopard near where Mr. Li had fallen into the pit and captured it using a tranquilizer gun. Due to the fracture, Mr. Li spent RMB 25,000 on medical expenses and RMB 20,000 on lost work income. He then sued Mr. Zhang and Mr. Zhao, demanding that they compensate him for his losses.

The Rayto Team took the affirmative position: Mr. Zhao should compensate for part of the losses. The team debated around the following points: Mr. Zhao’s act of serving as a witness to a certain extent stimulated Mr. Li to engage in the highly dangerous act of entering the mountain to catch the leopard; Mr. Zhao failed to fulfill his duty to rescue Mr. Li arising from his prior conduct; and causation in tort law generally adopts the criterion of adequate causation. Their logic was rigorous and their arguments powerful, winning unanimous recognition from the judges.

The Rayto team, led by Attorney Cheng Bao and composed of Jinhui Zhang, Bin Zhang, and Ya Qiang, remained calm and responded rigorously in the debate, ultimately winning second prize in the Lawyers Debate Invitational Tournament.

Attorney Cheng Bao, with his outstanding on-the-spot performance and solid legal foundation, was named an “Outstanding Debater.”
